Plan your Sweden application
The same visa, three different places to submit itSee the common routes, understand the hand-offs, then confirm every requirement on the official website.01 / ROUTES
Choose the route that matches your trip
These are starting points—not an eligibility decision. Open the official route before you apply.- ↗Schengen visa
Visits up to 90 days when Sweden is the main destination, decided by the Swedish Migration Agency.
- ↗Visitor's residence permit
Stays over 90 days, a separate Migration Agency process from the short-stay visa.
02 / JOURNEY
What the application journey usually looks like
The exact order can vary by visa, nationality and application location. “If asked” steps are conditional.- 01Confirm visa or residence permit
Purpose and length of stay decide whether the Schengen visa or the visitor's residence permit route applies.
- 02Look up your submission channel

The submission channel for your country of residence can be a VFS Global centre, a Swedish embassy or consulate, or another Schengen state representing Sweden.
GUIDELENS HELPS HERE - 03Complete the harmonised application form
The Migration Agency publishes the harmonised EU application form used for the visa.
- 04Pay and book with that channel
Fees, appointment booking and document handling follow whichever channel is named for that country.
IF ASKED - 05Attend and give biometrics
Fingerprints and a photo are captured when the file is submitted in person.
- 06Track through the same channel
Decisions are normally reached in about 15 days once the file is complete.
03 / BEFORE YOU START
Four things to know before you start
- Three submission paths
- Depending on country of residence, a Schengen visa for Sweden is submitted via VFS Global, a Swedish mission, or a representing Schengen state's embassy.
- A published harmonised form
- The Migration Agency publishes the standard EU Schengen visa application form as a downloadable document.
- A daily funds guideline
- Sweden expects roughly SEK 700 available per day of the visit, which a host in Sweden can also cover.
- Separate long-stay route
- A stay of more than 90 days needs a visitor's residence permit, a different Migration Agency procedure from the visa.
04 / PRACTICAL GUIDE
Sweden visa details that differ from the regional guide
Sweden decides the Schengen visa itself, but where the application is physically submitted depends entirely on the applicant's country of residence.- 01

Keep the Schengen rule in view
For a multi-country trip, apply to the country that is the main purpose or longest stay. Use the first country only when stays are equal. The 90 days in any 180-day period are counted across the whole Schengen area.
