Plan your Portugal application

The consular post follows your residence, AIMA follows the visaSee the common routes, understand the hand-offs, then confirm every requirement on the official website.

01 / ROUTES

Choose the route that matches your trip

These are starting points—not an eligibility decision. Open the official route before you apply.
  • ↗
    Short-stay Schengen visa

Tourism, business and family visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period when Portugal is the main destination.

  • ↗
    National long-stay visa

Study, work, family reunification or residence in Portugal for more than 90 days.

02 / JOURNEY

What the application journey usually looks like

The exact order can vary by visa, nationality and application location. “If asked” steps are conditional.
  1. 01
    Identify your consular post

The MNE's country-by-country list shows whether your nationality and residence route to a Portuguese consulate, an external provider, or a representing Schengen state.

  2. 02
    Register on the e-visa portal

Register on the e-visa portal to open an online application before booking an appointment.

  3. 03
Upload documents & book the slot

Upload the supporting documents named for your route and select an available appointment slot.

  4. 04
    Attend, pay & give biometrics

At the appointment, present the printed file, pay the fee and give biometric data where required.

    IF ASKED
  5. 05
    Track the visa decision

The responsible consular post or provider reports the outcome through the same portal or its own notification channel.

  6. 06
    Complete AIMA registration after arrival

For a national long-stay visa, AIMA takes over after arrival to schedule the biometrics appointment that produces the residence permit.

03 / BEFORE YOU START

Four things to know before you start

Official starting point
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (vistos.mne.gov.pt) sets out Schengen and national visa routes and where each nationality and residence should apply.
Submission depends on residence
Depending on where you legally live, the responsible channel can be a Portuguese consulate, a provider such as VFS Global, TLScontact or BLS, or an embassy representing Portugal.
Short or long stay
Up to 90 days in 180 days uses the Schengen route; study, work, family reunification or residence over 90 days uses the national visa route.
After arrival
AIMA, which replaced the former SEF, schedules the biometrics appointment that issues the residence permit for national long-stay visa holders.

04 / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Portugal visa details that differ from the regional guide

Portugal's submission network is organised by residence country, and the agency handling the visa is not the one that finishes the process after arrival.
  1. 01

Your consular post depends on residence, not just nationality

The MNE publishes a country-by-country list showing the exact Portuguese consulate, external provider or representing Schengen state responsible for your nationality and country of residence.

  2. 02

National visas use a separate form and route

A national long-stay visa is a distinct application from the Schengen short-stay form, with its own eligibility categories and document list published on the national-visas section of the portal.

  3. 03

AIMA finishes what the consulate starts

After entering Portugal on a national visa, AIMA — not the consulate that issued the visa — schedules the biometrics appointment and issues the residence permit for the actual stay.

Keep the Schengen rule in view

For a multi-country trip, apply to the country that is the main purpose or longest stay. Use the first country only when stays are equal. The 90 days in any 180-day period are counted across the whole Schengen area.

05 / PREPARE

Information worth gathering before you open the form

Not every item applies to every route. Use the official checklist generated for your application.
  • Passport and previous travel-document details

  • Travel dates, itinerary and accommodation

  • Travel medical insurance for the Schengen stay

  • Evidence of funds and the purpose of the trip

  • Employment, study or sponsor information where relevant
