Plan your Liechtenstein application
Swiss missions issue the visa; Vaduz issues the residence quotaSee the common routes, understand the hand-offs, then confirm every requirement on the official website.01 / ROUTES
Choose the route that matches your trip
These are starting points—not an eligibility decision. Open the official route before you apply.- ↗Schengen short-stay visa
Visits up to 90 days in any 180-day period, issued through the Swiss embassy or consulate representing Liechtenstein where it has no mission of its own.
- ↗Residence permit (quota-limited)
Work, study or family stays over 90 days, decided domestically by Liechtenstein's Migration and Passport Office under a fixed annual quota.
02 / JOURNEY
What the application journey usually looks like
The exact order can vary by visa, nationality and application location. “If asked” steps are conditional.- 01Confirm Liechtenstein is your main destination
Liechtenstein does not operate its own visa-issuing network in most countries, so short-stay Schengen applications are handled by Swiss diplomatic missions on its behalf.
- 02Find the Swiss representation covering your location

The relevant Swiss embassy or consulate is the one responsible for the applicant's country of residence, following a representation arrangement that dates back to Liechtenstein's customs and currency union with Switzerland.
GUIDELENS HELPS HERE - 03Apply for the Schengen visa through that Swiss mission
The application itself follows the standard Schengen short-stay form and supporting evidence used across the area.
- 04Attend the Swiss embassy or consulate appointment
Biometric data collection happens at the Swiss mission's in-person appointment, the same as any other Schengen application.
IF ASKED - 05For a longer stay, check the current year's residence-permit quota
Unlike a short Schengen visit, a residence permit is capped by a government-set annual quota split between EEA and Swiss categories, with limited discretionary room for others.
- 06File the residence permit application with the Migration and Passport Office in Vaduz
Domestic residence-permit applications are filed with Liechtenstein's own Migration and Passport Office (Ausländer- und Passamt) in Vaduz, separate from the Swiss-run visa step.
03 / BEFORE YOU START
Four things to know before you start
- Two different authorities
- A short Schengen visa to visit Liechtenstein is issued by a Swiss embassy or consulate; the residence permit to stay longer is decided by Liechtenstein's own Migration and Passport Office.
- Representation, not delegation of sovereignty
- Switzerland has represented Liechtenstein's consular interests since 1919 in places where Liechtenstein has no mission of its own, including many Schengen visa applications.
- Quota-limited residence
- Liechtenstein sets a fixed annual number of residence permits by category, with EEA nationals and Swiss nationals each having a separate allotment, so timing and category can affect whether a permit is available that year.
- Limited room for others
- Outside the quota categories, Liechtenstein grants only a small number of residence permits at its discretion, generally reserved for cases of particular public or economic interest.
04 / PRACTICAL GUIDE
Liechtenstein's split visa and residence system
Liechtenstein's small diplomatic footprint means the entry visa and the long-stay residence permit are handled by two different authorities in two different places.- 01
Swiss missions represent Liechtenstein abroad
Where Liechtenstein has no embassy or consulate of its own, the responsible Swiss diplomatic mission processes and issues the Schengen visa on its behalf.

Residence permits are capped by a yearly quota

The Vaduz office, not the Swiss mission, decides residence
Once inside Liechtenstein or once a quota place is available, the residence-permit application itself is filed with and decided by the Ausländer- und Passamt in Vaduz, not the visa-issuing Swiss post.

Keep the Schengen rule in view
For a multi-country trip, apply to the country that is the main purpose or longest stay. Use the first country only when stays are equal. The 90 days in any 180-day period are counted across the whole Schengen area.
