Plan your Belgium application

Visa on Web decides the route before any embassy visitSee the common routes, understand the hand-offs, then confirm every requirement on the official website.

01 / ROUTES

Choose the route that matches your trip

These are starting points—not an eligibility decision. Open the official route before you apply.
  • ↗
    Schengen short-stay visa (C)

Tourism, business or family visits up to 90 days in any 180-day period when Belgium is the main destination.

  • ↗
    National long-stay visa (D)

Study, work, family reunification or other stays over 90 days, assessed by the Immigration Office.

02 / JOURNEY

What the application journey usually looks like

The exact order can vary by visa, nationality and application location. “If asked” steps are conditional.
  1. 01
    Confirm the Belgian visa category

Purpose and length of stay determine whether the Schengen route or a national D-visa route applies.

  2. 02
Create your file on Visa on Web (VOW)

Belgium requires the Visa on Web (VOW) online form to be completed before any appointment can be booked.

  3. 03
Submit the online form and supporting evidence

Attach the purpose-specific documents the VOW form requests; a national D-visa file is assessed by the Immigration Office even though it is lodged abroad.

  4. 04
    Book the appointment it unlocks

Once VOW is submitted, an appointment option appears for the competent Belgian diplomatic post or its outsourced partner (VFS Global or TLScontact, depending on location).

    IF ASKED
  5. 05
Attend the embassy, consulate or outsourced partner

Biometric data collection at the appointment is mandatory for nearly all applicants.

  6. 06
    Track the Immigration Office decision

The Immigration Office of the FPS Home Affairs decides national visa files; short-stay decisions are typically communicated through the same post or partner.

03 / BEFORE YOU START

Four things to know before you start

Mandatory online step
Belgium will not accept a visa application without the completed Visa on Web (VOW) form submitted first.
Two authorities, one file
FPS Foreign Affairs runs the consular network, but the Immigration Office of the FPS Home Affairs is the authority that actually decides most visa applications.
Submission can be outsourced
Depending on where you apply, the file may be lodged at a Belgian embassy or consulate, or at an outsourced Visa Application Centre such as VFS Global or TLScontact.
Long-stay fee changes
Belgium has periodically adjusted its long-stay (D) visa handling fee; confirm the current amount on the official portal before paying.

04 / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Belgium's Visa on Web gatekeeper step

Belgium's short-stay and national visa routes both start on the same online platform, but the decision-making authority behind them is different from the consulate you visit.
  1. 01

Nothing moves until VOW is submitted

Fill in the Visa on Web application first; the system only offers an appointment-booking option once your form is complete, and applications are not accepted without it.

  2. 02

The Immigration Office decides, not just the embassy

General information and decisions for many visa categories sit with the Immigration Office of the FPS Home Affairs, separate from the consular staff who take your file.

  3. 03

    Confirm your submission channel first

Some consular districts route applications through VFS Global or TLScontact rather than the embassy counter; check the competent post's own page before booking.

  4. 04

Keep the Schengen rule in view

For a multi-country trip, apply to the country that is the main purpose or longest stay. Use the first country only when stays are equal. The 90 days in any 180-day period are counted across the whole Schengen area.

05 / PREPARE

Information worth gathering before you open the form

Not every item applies to every route. Use the official checklist generated for your application.
  • Passport and previous travel-document details

  • Travel dates, itinerary and accommodation

  • Travel medical insurance for the Schengen stay

  • Evidence of funds and the purpose of the trip

  • Employment, study or sponsor information where relevant

  • Translations and route-specific documents requested locally
